Ask Praise Science!!!

My new roommate Mike asks: "What would happen if one were to be hit with a beam of protons travelling at nearly the speed of light?"

I'd venture a guess that the photons would travel through you with so much energy that it would be like being shot with a high powered laser. what that actually does to the human body, I have no idea. I'll bet it's brutal though.

hmmm... i think it would depend on what wavelength of energy the photons are carrying. visible light is a form of photon and we are bombarded by that constantly at the speed of light (because it IS light), and nothing really happens.

so i think you made a typo - it should be PROTONS, since that's what the LHC is going to be smashing. now getting blasted with protons... i have no idea what that would do. it could either pass through you, or smash into the protons that make up the atoms of your body. hopefully some sort of wicked chain reaction would then occur causing all your body's matter to disintegrate leaving only a puff of smoke.

I did mean protons. I managed to typo twice because I was thinking about lasers.

P.s. I think we're the only people who read this blog.

p.p.s. at least the only people who make comments.

you get +1,000,000 science points for beating us at our own game, but unfortunately, we have to dock you 999,900 science points for fucking up your html.

i'll go ahead and use those 100 points to propose the formation of a Bring Bugorski to America fund:

"Bugorski showed interest in making himself available for study to Western researchers, but couldn't afford to leave Protvino and go west."

i'm pretty sure science is crying about this one.

ohhhh. Half of his head burnt off and grand mal seizures. That really is brutal.
